Performance Space Design
Unexpected Journey
Unknown space is always full of exploration and surprise. The Journey is about satisfaction when you complete it at the end. The idea of an unknown journey is inspired by the performance space of the immersive play Sleep No More. When audiences are inside the hotel which is the five-floor performance, the environment and what is going to happen are unknown for them. The designers of Sleep No More also did a series of efforts to prepare the audiences for the show, including the old-fashion coat check at the very beginning, the way of picking a poker card as your sequence to enter the space at the ticket house, and most importantly the bar which is decorated with the style strongly correspond to the show. By experiencing this series of environments and settings, the audiences’ feeling towards the show is continuous and complete, which is applied in my design for the performance space of The Shakespeare’s Society.
